Have you ever had a job that you love so much that when you come to that day that you hate it your all confused? I have finally come to that for the first time in 10 years. I have been working for about age 13. I have had many jobs. Some jobs I liked more then others and some were just to get me through. I the last few years I have found three jobs that I just seem to love and can't live with out. One of these jobs is where I know most of my friends today from. Yes I am talking of the almighty Java 'n' Juice, aka: Java Books, aka: Drama Books. I have worked there two different times over the last 4-5 years. After Rodger (the 3rd owner) bought the shop I jumped right on board to help make that shop what it really could be. I soon became the manager and between Rodger and I we had that place running great. Then the all might Coffee Slinger got into the mix and it even got better. Between the three of us we could almost do anything it felt, even with the fight here or there. The shop soon tripled it's income and hit the papers in five different articles. One which hit the front page of the entertainment/food section. All and all the shop was doing great. Out of no where the three of us stopped working well with each other. Rodger and I started fighting about everything. We opened an new shop that fell apart quickly (due to poor owners planning that he admits to) and I ended up walking off the job during a meeting and not going back but to see friends at night.
After leaving I started working full time in the theatre and soon after started at the ambulance company. Everything was going just fine. Coffee Slinger left and moved to the "Big Green Giant" and Java had a new manager that kept the place going at least where I left it. She did well at what she did. She was unable to put in the crazy hours that I did but then how in their right mind would. A better job came up for her and she ended up taking off on the shop. So there was Rodger having to run thing by him self. Can I just say that I very scary. He is the worst business man I have ever met. He is full of great ideas but with out the right help he destroys them some how.
Soon after he started to run thing on his own he brought who I like to call "The Evil One" up to help him. The evil one is an employ that I have known for year, hired, and retrained to the "Java way" of doing things. Mind you she IS EVIL. So she takes over the shop. All of the sudden employees are unhappy, the sop is losing money, and I start to see MY old customers at other shops. (yes I still went to other shops to see how business was because I'm a dork) When thing were so bad that the people working for the evil one were begging me to come back I sat down and started coming up with a way that I could go back and not loss money. I sat down with Rodger and his Wife to talk about this with no response. Then when his manager couldn't follow through with her duties he called and asked if I would come and help out as an employee under him only. So I did and things were good. I started trying to take the evil ones job as best as I could only being there part time. Rodger thought about it a few time even. Then the news came down that he is selling. Slinger and I were talking about opening a coffee shop some time in the future anyway this was our shot.
I jumped to it I ran into a guy who as long as I have know keeps telling me he will get me the money when I need to buy a shop. I had another person I know say he would front $80,000 to get me started. Things were looking up. Rodger and I talked about it a few time even. Then out of no where he never had time nor would make time to sit and talk about the sell. Via my customers I found out that he went and put it on the market. Come to find out he already had a BUYER. My heart sank at the sound of that news. I talked to Rodger , who had time now for me, and he said that he would come to me first if the deal fell through. Going off his word (stupid me) I was ok with that. Bout 2 weeks later I hear him talking about this dumb idea about a "pass thru window" with the pizza shop behind us. Which I think is a dumb thing to even think about. Come on who drinks coffee with pizza. What ever it's his shop and I'm going to buy it before that happens, so I was thinking.
Last night I was at work when I got a phone call from him asking me to close at 10pm. It wasn't a slow night but he's the boss. He kept talking while I was trying to help people, like he always does. As I'm only a 1/4 listening to him I hear him say that he can't pay the bills and has no way to order product that we need. So I just sat there with out a word and waited. He just sat there and finely gave up and said bye.
So after all of that I ask, is that his way of saying he is just going to go down with the ship? Do I have a chance to save the shop? I couldn't believe it. I have been thinking about it all night and day. I can't decide if I should go get another job and cut my ties or should I stick it out and see if he'll come around and sell it to me. I'm lost and probably not making any since so until next time...
